Download MagicTweak Free for Windows
We have a few concerns about this system customizer, but on the whole it works quite well. As with similar programs, MagicTweak lets you change hidden Windows settings without digging through the Registry. For instance, you can disable Start menu items, make hard drives disappear, hide the system clock, disable downloading, and customize the appearance of Internet Explorer. Under the Utilities tab, you’ll find a bevy of additional helpful tools, including ones for adding or removing programs, managing applications that launch on bootup, clearing your Web-surfing tracks, hiding desktop icons, and restricting access to certain programs. There’s even a backup utility. The easy-to-navigate interface offers a handsome, Mac-style default look and a choice of several other skins. We think it strange that you can’t password-protect MagicTweak, as many of its tools seem geared toward security. Also, we initially thought the program didn’t work at all; the help files don’t tell you that you have to restart your computer to enable your changes. Some users may also take issue with the short 15-day trial period and the rather large 65MB footprint. Nevertheless, if you want to tweak your system and don’t feel comfortable with Regedit, MagicTweak’s ease of use and robust feature set make it worth considering.
